Bristol’s Global Game Jam: 29th to 31st January

January 4th, 2010 by Will Luton

As we announced back in another decade Mobile Pie are, with a little help from our friends at UWE, hosting a big ol’ Global Game Jam at the Pervasive Media Studios from the evening of Friday 29th to Sunday 31st January. The event challenges both amateur and professional designers, artists and developers to create a videogame in just 48 hours!

The event is sure to be non-stop, draining, exciting and fun! It will also be a great opportunity to met new friends and industry pros with on-hand experts from local codeshops and agencies. And what’s more industry legend Ste Curran (Creative Director at Zoe Mode) will be giving this year’s keynote speech (something we can’t wait to hear)!

To enter you don’t need to be a hot shot, you just need a set of either creative or technical skills that could assist a team making a game and a willingness to work and play hard. Places are limited but to register your interest please enter your details here.

We hope to see you there!

Mistletoe, Wine & Our Year in Brief

December 22nd, 2009 by Will Luton

When I was a little younger than I am today, Christmas was really about videogames. Sure there’s family, friends, food, the baby Jesus, trees, carols, snow, but for an awkward pre-teen boy the main event was less brussel sprouts and more the magical pixel forms of Sonic, Ryu and Pac-Man.

These days of course I’m in The Oven where we actually create that special thumb-destroying magic. And what a magical year it has been…

*Wavy dream sequence*

We’ve seen the release of two versions of our critically acclaimed word puzzle game Oh, My Word! 2 which also featured, alongside a couple of fantastic jumpers, in ustwo’s Christmas romp Crazo.

We announced our partnership with iPhone publishing premiers Tag Games to bring B-Boy Brawl to your iPod touches and iPhones in early 2010.

Myself and Matt Aranha joined the pie, adding a delicious creative aroma and robust C++ flavours (respectively).

I was all over the media with two appearances on local radio and a cutting edge article on videogame design techniques at the industry website, Gamasutra. Oh, and there was also the handful of YouTube videos, Richard was on this podcast and the whole team got interviewed by Pocket Gamer!

We announced Bristol’s first and only Global Games Jam.

All the way back in September we had a brilliant time at igfest ‘09 and early still in the year Rich and Tom rocked SXSW and the GSMA Mobile World Congress.

Our much hyped and loved business cards arrived in August.

We moved to our spanking new eco office and stuck I Am 8-bit Bliks everywhere.

And just last week the team were pap’ed for Heat magazine whilst enjoying the festive cheer at the Mobile Pie christmas party:

2009 was a great year, but look out 2010 because we’re heading right at you, full steam ahead with great games and entertainment for your mobile. You’ll never be bored again.

But until then:

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family!

With love,

Mobile Pie x

Oh, My Word! 2: Critical Reaction

December 8th, 2009 by Will Luton

Oh, My Word! 2 is the best thing to happen to videogaming since Nolan Bushnell walked in to a San Francisco bar with Pong, however would you believe some people have to be told how it is? It’s true.

Luckily, the internet is full of professionals who like to offer critical insight and they’re always on hand to let the world know how good (or bad) things are. So here is, warts and all, a round up of the critical reception received by our latest magnum opus:

Oh, My Word! 2 might fly under the radar of many gamers. A lack of guns, explosions and fancy 3D graphics might immediately write the game off for many, but these people were never the game’s target demographic. Saying this, the game certainly has wide appeal, and will surprise many who assumed beforehand that it wouldn’t be their cup of tea (like my good self). Give the game an inch however, and it’ll steal a mile; Oh, My Word! 2 is deceptively good fun. Word-puzzle fans shouldn’t think twice about snapping this up.

7/10

App Gamer review

Word game aficionados have cause to celebrate because Oh, My Word! 2 is now out for the iPhone and iPod touch… All in all, Mobile Pie does an extremely great job by coming up with a creative new take on a crowded genre that not only packs hours of diversion but is great to play anytime and anywhere!

4.75/5

App-reciation Reviews review

The result is a game that feels more like an update that rounds out a first attempt than a true sequel which expands the concept. Oh, My Word! 2 is a pleasant experience for word fiends, then, but more SOLID than SUPER.

6/10

Pocket Gamer review

Reviews are still coming in (especially on the App Store page), but generally the impression is very positive! What did you think? Let us know in the comments.
